Late rice "yangmei", originally from Dinghai, Zhejiang Province, is a late-maturing variety. It is one of the "four excellent varieties" of Chinese plums. This variety has excellent quality and good processing properties, has a long economic lifespan, and strong adaptability. However, the flesh column of this variety is tender and prone to moisture leakage, resulting in poor transportation and storage performance. The fresh fruit is not suitable for long-distance transportation and is mainly sold locally.
Botanical characteristics
Late rice "yangmei" belongs to the "yangmei" family and "yangmei" genus of plants. It has a strong tree structure, upright growth, a tall tree crown, and a naturally round-topped shape. The root system is distributed 20 to 70 cm deep, with well-developed roots. It is suitable for planting in sandy soil and has a slightly stronger wind resistance. The adult trees mainly produce spring shoots, which are the main fruiting branches in the second year. The fruiting branches mostly bear medium to short fruit clusters, which yield the best results. It starts to bear fruit after 5 to 6 years of planting, enters the peak fruiting period around 13 years, and the yield of an adult tree is 80 to 150 kg. The fruit is spherical in shape, with a single fruit weight of about 12 grams, and the length and width are 2.6 cm × 2.7 cm. When fully ripe, it is purple-black, and when fully mature, it is nearly black. The pericarp is round and thick, the fruit top is slightly concave, the fruit base is round, the fruit stalk is short, the flesh is fine, the juice is abundant, the taste is sweet and sour, the aroma is rich, and the seed flesh is easy to separate. The fruit's soluble solids content is 12.6%, the total sugar content is 9.6%, the edible rate is 95% to 96%, and the juice content is over 82%. The fresh fruit has a fine texture, a sweet and rich taste with a hint of acidity, a rich aroma, and excellent quality. The fresh fruit has excellent eating quality.
