Product Introduction
Yangmei Seed
The hybrid variety contains Dongkui, Baiqi and Shijing.

1. Seed Acquisition and Processing (Key Steps)
Yangmei seeds cannot be directly sown. They must be properly processed to break dormancy and increase the germination rate.
Obtain seeds:
Select fully ripe, plump and healthy jujube fruits.
Eat or scrape off the pulp, clean the seeds thoroughly, remove all remaining pulp and mucus to prevent mold growth.
Stratification treatment (vernalization treatment):
This is a process that simulates the wintering process of seeds in nature, and it is crucial for the germination of bayberry seeds.
Time: Usually carried out in autumn (from October to December), to prepare for sowing in the following spring.
Method:
Mix the clean seeds with moist river sand (the moisture level should be such that when you squeeze it into a ball, it will break apart when you release your hand) in a ratio of 1:3.
Put it into a flower pot, a wooden box or a plastic bag with holes.
Store it in a cool environment of 3-5°C, such as the refrigerator's chilled compartment (not the freezer!) or the cellar.
Management: Conduct an inspection every 2-3 weeks. Keep the sand moist to prevent the seeds from rotting due to excessive dryness or wetness.
Duration: The sand storage treatment needs to last for 4 to 6 months until the following spring (March to April), when the seed cracks open and the white part is exposed, at which point it can be removed and sown.
II. Sowing
Time: Spring, when the temperature stabilizes at 15-20°C or above (usually in March and April).
Soil: Select a loose, fertile, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH level (4.5 - 6.5). You can mix garden soil, leaf mold soil and river sand.
Container: Use seedling pots, cell trays or small flowerpots. The bottom should have drainage holes.
Sowing method:
Fill the pot with soil and water it thoroughly.
Plant the processed seeds directly into the soil, covering them with about 1-2 centimeters of soil (approximately 1-2 times the diameter of the seeds).
Gently compact the soil to ensure that the seeds are in close contact with it.
The film can be covered or a glass plate can be placed on top to retain heat and moisture, but ventilation should be ensured.
III. Care during Germination Period
Temperature: Maintain at around 20-25°C, which is conducive to germination.
Humidity: Keep the soil moist, but avoid waterlogging. You can water it by spraying with a watering can.
Lighting: Place it in a location with bright diffused light and avoid direct sunlight.
Germination time: Under suitable conditions, treated seeds usually take 1 to 2 months to gradually sprout. Please be patient!
IV. Management during the Seedling Stage
Weeding: When the seedlings have grown 3-4 true leaves, if the planting density is too high, weak or diseased seedlings should be removed to maintain the spacing between the seedlings, so that the healthy seedlings have sufficient space for growth.
Lighting: Gradually increase the lighting to ensure the plants receive sufficient sunlight, which will promote the healthy growth of the seedlings.
Fertilizer and Water:
Keep the soil moist but not overly wet. Water thoroughly.
During the seedling stage, the plants do not require much fertilizer. Once the seedlings have grown firmly, apply a very dilute liquid fertilizer (such as diluted compost water or compound fertilizer solution) every half month. Remember to "apply small amounts frequently".
Transplanting: When the seedlings grow to be 10-15 centimeters tall and the root system fills the small pot, they can be transplanted to a larger flower pot.
V. Post-Harvest Management and Precautions
For planting in the ground: If you plan to plant in the ground, it is recommended to first cultivate the tree in a pot for 1-2 years. Once the tree is strong enough, transplant it to an outdoor location. Choose a site with ample sunlight, deep soil, and good drainage, and acidic soil.
Pollination and Fruition: Yangmei is a dioecious plant, which means that both female and male plants need to be planted simultaneously, or there must be male plants nearby, in order to be pollinated by wind or insects and bear fruit. Trees grown from seeds have a random gender, and it takes 8 to 10 years or even longer before they reach the fruiting stage.
Grafting: To shorten the fruit-bearing period and ensure the quality of the fruits (seed propagation may lead to variations, and the fruit quality is inferior to that of the parent plant), the common practice is: first cultivate the rootstock using seeds (for 2-3 years), and then take the scions from high-quality and productive mature bayberry trees for grafting. This is the standard method for orchard planting.
Summary and Reminders
Advantages: Experience the complete life cycle of plants, low cost, and the possibility of cultivating new varieties (seedlings may vary).
Disadvantages: The process takes an extremely long time (8-10 years to achieve results), and the outcome is highly uncertain (the sex of the offspring is unknown, and the quality of the fruits may deteriorate).
Advice for enthusiasts: Enjoy the process of sowing and nurturing. Don't expect quick results. If your primary goal is to enjoy eating mangosteen, it is more recommended to directly purchase grafted mangosteen saplings.
