Product Introduction

Product Name: Titan Blueberry

Description:
Titan is a premium late-midseason Rabbiteye blueberry variety, released by the University of Georgia in 2010. Bred by Dr. D. Scott NeSmith from a cross of T-460 and FL 80-11, Titan has quickly become recognized as a breakthrough in berry size – producing the largest fruit of any rabbiteye variety released to date. This variety is ideal for commercial growers, pick-your-own farms, and home gardeners who value large, firm, high-quality berries.

A Giant Among Blueberries:

The most striking feature of Titan is its exceptionally large berry size. Under suitable conditions, Titan berries can be 2 to 3 times larger than typical rabbiteye varieties, often exceeding 3 grams per berry – and sometimes being larger in diameter than a U.S. quarter coin. The fruit continues to increase in size after turning blue, and its outstanding firmness allows berries to hang on the bush for extended periods, achieving even greater size. Research trials have consistently confirmed Titan as the largest-berried rabbiteye variety tested.

Appearance & Flavor:
Titan berries are medium blue in color with a small, dry stem scar that contributes to excellent shelf life. The flavor is good and well-balanced, with a sweet profile that appeals to a wide range of consumers. In 2024 trials, Titan achieved a total soluble solids (TSS) of 15.9 degrees Brix – among the highest in the study. The flesh is very firm, making it suitable for mechanical harvesting and long-distance shipping.

Key Commercial Advantages:

  • Largest Berry Size – Often exceeding 3g per berry, 2–3 times larger than typical rabbiteye varieties

  • Outstanding Firmness – Very firm fruit that holds well on the bush and ships exceptionally well

  • Excellent Shelf Life – Dry stem scar and firm texture contribute to extended postharvest quality

  • Suitable for Machine Harvesting – Firmness and plant habit make it ideal for mechanical harvesting

  • Heat Tolerant – Research shows Titan maintains fruit quality and size better than highbush varieties under high-temperature stress, with less reduction in berry weight and sugar-to-acid ratio

  • Reliable Yields – Produces consistent yields comparable to established standards like 'Climax' and 'Premier'

  • Vigorous, Upright Plant – Strong growth habit with narrow crown; responds well to pruning and hedging

Nutritional Notes:
Titan blueberries are rich in anthocyanins, vitamin C, and dietary fiber. Research evaluating Titan for juice processing confirmed its high functional component content and antioxidant capacity, making it suitable for both fresh market and processing applications.

Cultivation Notes:

  • Chill Requirement: 500–550 hours below 45°F (7°C)

  • Pollination: Titan is partially self-fertile, but cross-pollination with other rabbiteye varieties is strongly recommended for optimal fruit set. Recommended companion: Vernon

  • Soil: Well-drained, acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5)

  • Plant Habit: Vigorous, upright, narrow crown; grows to approximately 1.5–1.8m by year 4

  • Cracking Risk: ⚠️ Significant fruit cracking can occur under wet conditions during ripening. Proper water management is essential to minimize losses

  • Suitable Regions: USDA Zones 7–9; recommended wherever rabbiteye blueberries are grown successfully
