Product Introduction

Product Name: Red-Fleshed Pomelo (Hongxin You)

Description:
Red-Fleshed Pomelo, also known as Hongxin You or Red Heart Pomelo, is a premium citrus variety group prized for its striking rose-red to deep red flesh and rich, well-balanced flavor. The red color comes from lycopene and β-carotene – the same antioxidants found in tomatoes and watermelons – rather than anthocyanins, giving it a unique nutritional profile. While “Red-Fleshed Pomelo” is a collective name for several red-fleshed varieties, the most commercially prominent are Hongrou Miyou (Red-Fleshed Honey Pomelo) and Sanhong Miyou (Three-Red Honey Pomelo), the latter featuring red coloration in the skin, spongy layer, and flesh.

A Pomelo That Delivers on Every Level:

Red-Fleshed Pomelo is celebrated for its juicy, tender, and melting flesh with a delightfully tangy-sweet flavor. Unlike white-fleshed pomelos, which tend to be purely sweet, red-fleshed varieties offer a refreshing balance of sweetness and acidity that appeals to a wide range of palates. The fruit is seedless or nearly seedless, making it exceptionally convenient for fresh eating and juicing.

Appearance:
The fruit is obovate to round with a thin, yellow-green to pale orange skin (Three-Red varieties develop a distinctive pink blush on the rind). Inside, the flesh ranges from pale purple-red to deep rose red, with crisp, juicy juice sacs. Average fruit weight ranges from 750g to 1.5kg for Three-Red varieties, and up to 2.0kg for larger red-fleshed types.

Nutritional Excellence:
Red-Fleshed Pomelo is rich in lycopene (3.5–7.2mg per 100g) , vitamin C, and β-carotene, offering strong antioxidant benefits. Studies suggest that regular consumption may help reduce the risk of liver cancer, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Key Commercial Advantages:

  • Unique Red Flesh – A visually striking and nutritionally distinct citrus variety

  • Seedless – No seeds for hassle-free enjoyment

  • Excellent Storage Life – Stores for 1–2 months at room temperature, 3 months under refrigeration

  • Premium Market Positioning – Commands prices of 6–8 yuan per jin for Three-Red varieties in premium retail channels

  • Holiday Season Timing – Harvested in September to November, perfectly aligned with Mid-Autumn and National Day gifting seasons

  • High Yield – Yields of 2,500–3,000 jin per mu by year 4

Growing Regions:
Red-Fleshed Pomelo is successfully cultivated in Fujian (Pinghe – the core production region and National Geographical Indication area) , Guangdong (Meizhou) , Guangxi (Rongxian) , Yunnan (Hekou) , and Zhejiang (Lishui – the origin of Zaoshu Chuhong You) .

Cultivation Notes:

  • Climate: Requires annual average temperature of 17–21°C, ≥10°C accumulated temperature above 5,500°C, and winter temperatures not dropping below -3°C

  • Soil: Deep, well-drained sandy loam or loam with pH 5.5–6.5

  • Planting Density: 4m × 5m or 5m × 6m, approximately 28–33 trees per mu

  • Rootstock: Sour pomelo is recommended

  • Key Management: Focus on fruit thinning (50–80 fruits per tree), gibberellin application for fruit set, and pest control for leafminer, red spider mite, and anthracnose

Harvest Season:
September to November – with Three-Red varieties maturing in early September and main red-fleshed varieties reaching peak quality in late October to early November. A premium autumn variety that captures the Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day, and Spring Festival gift markets with its striking red flesh and excellent storage life.
