Product Introduction

Product Name: Dawuyuan Longan (Giant Round Longan)

Description:
Dawuyuan Longan is a premium longan variety originating from Rongxian County, Guangxi Province, China, with a cultivation history of over 600 years. It is recognized as one of the largest-fruited longan varieties in China, earning the title "King of Longan" for its extraordinary size and exceptional processing quality. The old Rongxian Annals recorded: "Rong produces longan, villages line the waters, and when ripe, they shine like gold and jade" – a poetic tribute to this cherished local treasure.

A Longan That Redefines Size and Quality:

The defining feature of Dawuyuan is its extraordinarily large fruit. Average single-fruit weight ranges from 17.8 to 18.3 grams, with the largest specimens reaching 31 grams – only 44 to 52 fruits per kilogram – making it the largest longan variety in China. The fruit diameter consistently exceeds 25mm, with premium-grade fruit reaching 27–29mm. This remarkable size, combined with a 74.1% edible rate (nearly 9 percentage points higher than ordinary longan), delivers exceptional value to consumers.

Appearance:
The fruit is oblate-round with a slightly raised or uneven shoulder and a distinctly depressed stem end. The skin is yellow-brown and relatively smooth. Inside, the flesh is waxy white and semi-transparent, with a crisp, refreshing texture and a clean, sweet flavor. A distinctive characteristic of Dawuyuan is its "dry pack" (干包) nature – the juice content is moderate and does not easily drip, making it ideal for long-distance transport and extended shelf life.

Flavor & Nutrition:
Dawuyuan delivers a sweet, refreshing flavor with a soluble solids content of 16%–18.5%. It is exceptionally rich in Vitamin C (144.8 mg per 100g of flesh) – far exceeding most fruits – along with protein, phosphorus, calcium, iron, and B vitamins. The fruit separates easily from the seed, and the flesh is thick and meaty.

Key Commercial Advantages:

  • Jumbo Fruit Size – 17.8–18.3g average, up to 31g – the largest longan variety in China

  • High Edible Rate – 73.4%–74.1%, compared to 64.5% for ordinary longan

  • Dry Pack (干包) – Moderate juice content that resists dripping, ideal for transport

  • Exceptional Processing Quality – 11–12 kg of dried longan flesh per 100 kg of fresh fruit (1–2 kg more than ordinary varieties); canned product qualification rate 6.8%–8.8% higher

  • Award-Winning Quality – First place at the 1987 Autonomous Region Longan Competition; exhibited at the National Agricultural Exhibition Hall in Beijing (1958, 1985); selected for the 1989 Beijing Asian Games Green Food Exhibition

  • Versatile Use – Excellent for fresh eating, canning, dried longan (桂圆干), and longan flesh products

  • Seed Utilization – The seed contains over 75% starch; 100 kg of seeds can produce over 30 kg of 37-degree liquor, and are also used for activated carbon and paste production

Growing Regions:
Native to Rongxian County, Guangxi Province, Dawuyuan is a major commercial variety in Guangxi, with core production areas in Rongxian (Rongxiang Town, Xidi Village, Litang Village), Lingshan, and Yulin (Beiliu) . It has also been successfully introduced to Chongqing (Zhutuo Town) , where it is cultivated as a late-maturing variety under the “Zhutuo Brand” and achieves yields of 500 kg per mu.

Cultivation Notes:

  • Climate: Annual average temperature 18–26°C; winter minimum 2–3°C; 8–14°C low temperatures from December to January required for flower bud differentiation; frost damage occurs at 0–2°C

  • Site Selection: Elevated, well-drained sites; soil pH 5.5–6.5 (red loam or sandy loam); cold-tolerant and suitable for northern fringe regions

  • Fertilization: Three applications per year for mature trees; highest yield from heavy pre-flowering fertilizer, followed by pre-harvest fertilizer; lowest from fruit-swelling fertilizer. Annual per-tree pure nutrient application: N 0.852kg, P₂O₅ 0.426kg, K₂O 1.022kg (N:P:K = 1.0:0.5:1.2)

  • Fruit Thinning: Necessary for over-fruiting clusters; retention amount depends on branch thickness, leaf number, and management level

  • Breeding Value: As a maternal parent, Dawuyuan crossed with Shixia produced the “Cuifeng” longan, which yielded 36.8 kg per tree by year 3 after top-grafting

  • Pest & Disease: Resistant to witches’ broom disease; fruit is prone to mold growth after maturity – timely harvest and proper storage management are essential

  • Biennial Bearing: Exhibits significant alternate bearing; balanced fertilization and fruit thinning are required for consistent production

Harvest Season:
Late July to August – a premium mid-to-late season longan that delivers extraordinary fruit size, high edible rate, and superior processing quality. With its 600-year heritage, multiple national awards, and National Geographical Indication recognition, Dawuyuan Longan commands strong market demand in both fresh fruit and processed product channels, particularly for premium gift packaging and high-end dried longan products.
